The Brewing Ground: New Glashouse Cafe in Joo Chiat
Another day, another new cafe opening in Singapore.
Many cafes call the East Coast home, from established players like Forty Hands, to new boutique cafes like C Cafe.
Opened up by the folks behind Mischief at Esplanade, The Brewing Ground is tucked away in the single lane streets of Joo Chiat, minutes off the main East Coast Rd, on the grounds of The Yards at Joo Chiat Place.
What used to be the site of the former Telok Kurau Primary School, The Yards has been transformed into a mixed use development including arts studios and language schools.
The Brewing Ground takes up a decent amount of real estate, and offers both indoor and outdoor seating.
With clean white walls, hanging plants, and daylight pouring in from the floor-to-ceiling windows, The Brewing Ground is a bright and inviting space.

Here, they have a pretty decent menu, from breakfast options (served from opening to 4pm) to brunch, salads, mains and pastas (from 11am).
We had the Breakfast Burger (S$20) which features a pork sausage patty served with silky scrambled eggs, caramelised onions, cheddar and ketchup-mayo sandwiched between two brioche buns, complete with a side of mesclun salad and a hash brown. Remember when I mentioned that the burger at PRAIRIE by Craftsmen was rather basic? Thankfully The Brewing Ground makes a bit of an effort here. It was pretty good overall, and I was surprised at how crispy the brioche buns were. I could have done with a slightly softer bun though, especially on the inside. Perhaps more sauce could have been added to make the dish a little less dry too.
We also had the Grilled Cheese Sandwich (S$15), with smoked salmon added for an additional S$5. With a triple cheese mix of gruyere, emmental and parmesan, the smoked salmon was not as salty as anticipated either, which was good.
Over on the beverage menu, you’ll find all the usual suspects.
I had an Iced White (S$6.50) to beat the afternoon heat. The coffee here was great, and registered a little acidic.
Overall, The Brewing Ground is a welcome addition to the East Coast cafe scene. Despite being new, crowds have started to pack out this cafe in droves, especially on a weekend brunch hour. And it’s no surprise considering the good coffee and food options sure to please any brunch lover.
