Three's a Crowd: New Rugged and Industrial Halal Ice Cream Cafe at Little India

When it comes to cafes in Singapore, there are largely several common aesthetic themes— Kinfolk-esque minimalist clean and white (@3, Daizu, Degree Celcius, Simple Cafe 簡單。, House Downstairs), tropical vibes (see: Merci Marcel) with hanging plants and other spots of greenery around, sleek dark furnishing (Parallel Coffee Roasters, The Alchemist at The Mill) complemented by accents of black, or industrial grey (see: LUCID) with bare concrete and exposed ceilings.

The latter is my personal favourite, so imagine my excitement when I heard Three’s a Crowd (an ice cream joint originally in Tampines), has opened a new outlet in Little India with said aesthetic.

The shopfront is gorgeous, with hanging drapes that open to a very narrow shop floor, featuring an aged grungy wall and simple white furniture.

Even on a weekday night, the after dinner crowd packed this place full, and we had to wait for a table to be free before we could settle in.

Flavours here are pretty safe, with crowd favourites like earl grey, double chocolate, oreo mint and mango passion etc.

We opted to go with the basic Maple Waffle with a double scoop of earl grey and blueberry yoghurt.

It was well presented and already came lightly drizzled.

The waffle was pretty soft, and I would have definitely preferred if it came a little crispier or with sauce on the side, just to balance the textures of the waffle and ice cream combo a little better.

Out of the two ice cream flavours, I definitely preferred the earl grey which was creamy and complemented the waffle nicely. The blueberry yoghurt felt more like a sorbet and seemed a bit of a slight mismatch if I’m being completely honest. The flavours just seemed a bit off when put together with the earl grey and the waffle, but I suppose that’s on me. Another creamy flavour would have been perfect and would be what I opt for should I find myself on return visits.

Overall, the waffles and ice cream are definitely adequate, and one to go for should you be more into traditional ice cream flavours. Plus points are also that Three’s a Crowd is Halal-certified. It’s a decent joint for sure, but nothing incredibly exceptional.

I definitely liked the look of the cafe though, and my visit at night was illuminated by the hanging overhead fairy lights. Pictures of it in the day definitely look great as well, with sunlight pouring into the cafe from the ceiling.

All in all, a decent addition to the growing ice cream cafe scene, and paired with the fact it is just steps away from Little India MRT station— one that is also accessible. It’s not hard to see why diners pack this little shophouse floor even on weekday nights.
