Baker's Bench Bakery: A New Bakery-Based Cafe in Outram
Outram truly has no shortage of cafes, and it’s an area I frequent because there are plenty to choose from. Joining the fray with their entrance earlier this year is Baker’s Bench Bakery located on Bukit Pasoh Road.

Specialising in handcrafted bakes freshly made each morning, Baker’s Bench Bakery is a feast for the eyes, both with their mouthwatering pastries and with the beautiful and classic decor.
As you enter the space, you’ll notice light pastel colours adorning the space, which I found pretty calming.
The touch of colour also complements the wooden furniture, as well as the concrete flooring and walls, which are clean and uncluttered.

It lends itself to a rather homely atmosphere, and is maybe (maybe) one of the, well, nicest cafe interiors around.

I visited on a Sunday for lunch, and had to wait almost an hour for a table for four. Mind, other cafes around had queues as well, which is testament to Outram’s popularity as a brunch stop.
But you don’t have to worry about standing around, as there’s a bench outside for you to wait to be called in.
Bakes of the day are displayed at the counter, where you’ll also place your order, with both sweet and savoury options.
We opted for the Savoury Scroll which is essentially a Danish pastry with pesto and melted cheese. The flavours came together beautifully and the pastry was delightfully crisp and buttery. Personally, I’d have loved if there was more pesto and cheese just to bring flavours up a notch.
On the menu, you’ll also find sandwiches, and the option to build your own brunch plate, which I went for.
I went for an item from each category, and built a plate consisting of two slices of sourdough, bacon, 65.5° egg, and a garden salad.
The brunch plate was alright, but I thought the food was underwhelming in taste, portion and aesthetics.
The 65.5° egg was interesting to have in a cafe, but it’s essentially half-boiled eggs you could get from a local coffeeshop. Perhaps it might be a beautiful way of incorporating familiar, local dishes in a cafe to some, but personally, I wouldn’t want to have that in a cafe. I would’ve liked the bacon to be crispy as well, though fans of soft bacon will probably be happy. The sourdough was good though, with just the right amount of crisp. Overall flavours were perhaps a little too simple, and the portion was pretty small for a brunch plate.
Building a brunch plate might be a nice novelty, but perhaps sticking with the bakes might be a wiser choice.
Over on the beverage menu, Baker’s Bench has items you’ll find in many other cafes; and my iced white was pretty good as well.
Price wise, bakes to fill your tummy, or a brunch plate and a cuppa will probably set you back about $18 per person.
The bakes here are pretty good, and my only regret is that I didn’t have more of them! I’d definitely choose them over the hot food options for future visits. The decor and homely vibe is lovely and inviting as well, and despite the fact that all tables were occupied, the cafe never felt too noisy.
Baker’s Bench may be a newcomer but they seem to have found a fanbase; and with a rotating menu, perhaps the hot food will also be a reason to return in the future.
