Supernova: Tanjong Katong's Newest Brunch Cafe

A fair few cafe openings have been around the East in recent weeks, and one of the most buzzed about ones has to be Supernova, a spacious new cafe for brunch located at the corner of Tanjong Katong Rd.

Run by the folks behind popular joints such as Apollo Coffee Bar, Atlas Coffeehouse, Neptune and Colombus Coffee Co, Supernova continues their foray into astronomically named cafes.

With outdoor and indoor seating as well as seating at the bar, the display of alcohol bottles at the counter gives this cafe a more distinguished atmosphere, compared to the casual vibe of their other outlets.

With clean white walls complemented by brown wooden furnishing and pockets of blue accents, natural light illuminates this space in the day.

Given the current hype surrounding the cafe, the crowds definitely came during the long weekend, and we waited about 15 to 20 minutes for a table, which all in all wasn’t too bad. It also helped that you don’t have to stay in a specific queue, since there’s plenty space around the outdoor area to stand and wait.

I’ve been to most of the other cafes run by the group, and food has been reliably good.

Brunch is served from 8am onwards, and you’ll find items like Passionfruit French Toast (S$20.90), Fried Chicken French Toast (S$24.50) and Steak Hash (S$26.90).

From the brunch menu, we had the Chorizo, Egg, Avo (S$20.90) which comes with spicy pork chorizo, organic sunny eggs (2 pcs; which you can opt to have scrambled instead), smashed avocado and sourdough. A plate with familiar brunch flavours; this was a dish that was hard to get wrong.

Lunch plates, which are available from 11am onwards, features items such as Eggs in Meurette (S$24), Mala Chicken Burger (S$22.50) and more.

We tried the Gorgonzola & Portobello Rigatoni (S$22.50) topped with walnuts and served with a baguette slice on the side. The flavours were well-balanced, though I thought the baguette was a little random to have considering there wasn’t enough sauce / oil to sweep up with the baguette slice.

Over on the sides we had the Shoestring Fries (S$10) which came with parmesan cheese shavings. Honestly, as someone pretty big on truffle fries, this did hit the spot even without truffle oil. It was fragrant and fried to perfection with just the right amount of crisp.

You’ll find all the usual suspects on the beverage menu, as well as a decently extensive list of spirits (clock some interesting flavours like Bubblegum Oolong (S$13) and more), as well as wines (white, red, rose, skin contact and sparkling options).

For coffee, I decided to go for the Einspanner (S$7.50) which came topped with salted foam and tasted rather interesting. Einspanners are typically served with whipped cream on top, which therefore makes for a sweeter coffee. Replacing it with salted foam though, is definitely an interesting choice as the salt cuts through the milkiness of the coffee, and I definitely enjoyed having something different.

All in all, it’s not hard to see why they’ve already become so popular. With such a strong presence already on the cafe scene in prime locations all around the island, it’s not surprising to see Supernova already running like a well-oiled machine.

With a beautiful space and enough real estate to accommodate lots of diners at one go, combined with hearty brunch dishes on the menu, Supernova is a great addition to the growing family of astronomically named cafes.
