Degree Celsius: New Minimalist White Dhoby Ghaut Coffee Bar

For those of you working in town around Dhoby Ghaut, there’s a newly opened coffee bar to cater to your caffeine needs. Enter Degree Celsius, located on the ground floor of the UBS Building, just opposite from the Dhoby Ghaut MRT station exit B.

With a high ceiling, clean white walls and leafy feature wall next to the coffee counter, Degree Celsius opens as early as 7:30am on the weekdays and operates till 6pm (but closes on the weekends), and comfortably sits more than 20 patrons.

It’s obvious that their target crowd includes office goers and perhaps a trickle of students heading over from SMU.

With coffee roasted by Jewel Coffee, you’ll find a pretty standard coffee and tea menu, as well as some pastries and cakes available on the counter.

We tried the Iced Earl Grey Tea and Iced Caramel Latte.

I was a little disappointed to see that the drinks were served in plastic cups, but it was a pretty decent size all things considered.

The coffee here is smooth but not acidic, and though I was in the mood for something slightly sweeter, I was a tad surprised at how sweet my caramel latte was. It was very milky too, and brought to mind the Spanish Latte at Arabica Coffee.

The Iced Earl Grey Tea was strong but refreshing.

Overall, I’d put the taste of coffee here on the level of the aforementioned Arabica Coffee and Mellower Coffee, which I’ll be honest is just decent but doesn’t blow me away, especially as I like my coffee just slightly more acidic.

During my visit, there were several patrons with their laptops out, and Degree Celsius even has sockets available for use, which is quite a surprise given how many cafes are not exactly welcoming for people to do work these days.

For a coffee run, Degree Celsius hits the mark at ‘decent’ and looks good, but there’s definitely better elsewhere I think.
